Turkish Presidency: Erdoğan Discussed Yemen and East Africa Files in Riyadh

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Turkish Presidency announced that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held extensive talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, during which they discussed in detail recent developments in Yemen, along with developments in East Africa.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the Turkish Presidency’s Directorate of Communications said the meeting also addressed a number of regional and international issues, most notably the situations in Syria and the Gaza Strip, in addition to ways to enhance bilateral relations between Ankara and Riyadh.

According to the joint statement issued at the conclusion of the visit, both sides renewed their support for Yemen’s legitimate government, represented by the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, and emphasized the importance of preserving Yemen’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

They also stressed the need to confront any attempts to divide the country or support internal forces seeking to undermine its security and stability.

The Turkish side expressed its support for the role played by Saudi Arabia in Yemen and its efforts to end the crisis, including responding to the request of the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council to hold a comprehensive conference in Riyadh with the participation of all southern parties, aimed at addressing the crisis and strengthening national reconciliation.

In a related context, Erdoğan affirmed during the talks Ankara’s keenness to advance bilateral relations in the fields of energy—particularly renewable energy—as well as defense industries, investments, trade, and technology.

Regarding the Palestinian issue, the Turkish president stressed his country’s continued support for efforts to rebuild Gaza and work toward achieving lasting peace in Palestine, emphasizing the need to intensify efforts to end the humanitarian crisis in the Strip.

The meeting also addressed developments in Syria, with Erdoğan affirming that preserving Syria’s territorial unity serves the interests of the entire region, noting that Turkey will continue to support Syria’s stability and coordinate with Saudi Arabia on reconstruction efforts.

The statement noted that both sides also discussed developments in East Africa. The visit concluded with the signing of four agreements between the two countries and the issuance of a joint statement.

Erdoğan’s last visit to Saudi Arabia was in July 2023, during which several agreements were signed in the fields of energy, defense industries, and investment.

The Turkish president is expected to travel to Egypt on Wednesday following the conclusion of his visit to Saudi Arabia.
