Government Investigative Committee Hears Testimonies of Arbitrary Detention and Enforced Disappearance Victims in Aden

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The National Commission to Investigate Allegations of Human Rights Violations (NCIAVHR) held a collective public hearing on Monday in the temporary capital, Aden. The session focused on victims of arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance since 2015, as part of the Commission’s ongoing mandate to conduct public hearings across various governorates.

During the session, Commission members Judge Jihad Abdul Rasool and Judge Dia Muhairiz heard direct and detailed testimonies from several victims of systematic and gross violations, specifically cases of arbitrary arrest and enforced disappearance.

The testimonies included first-hand accounts from victims and statements from their families, reflecting the scale of the violations they endured, such as:

  • Home raids and illegal restrictions on freedom.
  • Documentation and information regarding the incidents and the entities responsible for them.
  • Reports on the psychological impact and humanitarian consequences affecting their families and livelihoods.

The victims and their families called on the state to release those still detained, hold the perpetrators accountable, provide justice, and ensure reparations for the harm caused.

These hearings are part of the approach adopted by the Commission as a transitional justice mechanism. The goal is to uncover the truth behind violations that breach both national laws and international human rights charters. The Commission emphasized that this is a guaranteed right for all citizens, while ensuring the dignity of victims and the protection of their personal data.

The Commission reaffirmed that achieving justice is only possible through acknowledging and documenting the experiences of victims and survivors. This process contributes to strengthening the principle of legal accountability, preventing impunity, and consolidating the rule of law.
