“MASAM” Destroys Over 5,700 Landmines and Unexploded Ordnance in Mukalla, Eastern Yemen

On Thursday morning,”Masam” landmine clearance project in Yemen carried out a disposal operation targeting 5,754 pieces of landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO), and explosive devices in the city of Mukalla. This operation is part of its ongoing efforts to secure civilian lives and clear lands and civilian properties.

The project clarified that the disposed materials included 5,500 rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition, 5 air-to-surface rockets, 10 guided missiles, 4 anti-tank mines, 20 anti-personnel mines, 50 rounds of 37 mm caliber, 120 rounds of 23 mm caliber, 12 hand grenades, and 33 mortar shells of 82 mm caliber.

In a press statement, the project’s Director General, Osama bin Yusuf Al-Qasabi, confirmed that the operation was carried out in cooperation with the National Mine Action Program and the Executive Mine Action Center in Mukalla. He emphasized that it took place in a safe area far from population centers and agricultural lands, with full adherence to internationally approved disposal standards, despite field challenges.

Al-Qasabi noted that this operation aligns with Masam’s policy of documenting and disclosing all its activities. He explained that the project is keen to document its operations with audio and video and disseminate them through various media outlets, affirming that field teams continue their work year-round due to the vital importance of these tasks in protecting civilian lives.

Masam project continues its efforts in several Yemeni provinces suffering from widespread contamination by war remnants, aiming to enable the safe return of civilian life and reduce the risks threatening the population.
