Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Warns U.S. Ambassador of Risks Posed by STC’s Unilateral Measures

Yemen Monitor | Newsroom:

The Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), Dr. Rashad Mohammed al-Alimi, met on Monday with the US Ambassador to Yemen, Steven Fagin.

Al-Alimi warned of the repercussions of imposing any unilateral measures outside the agreed-upon frameworks—most notably the Declaration on the Transfer of Power and the Riyadh Agreement—stressing that such steps would undermine the unity of security and military decision-making, weaken the independence of the government, and create dangerous loopholes that could be exploited by the Houthi militia and terrorist organizations cooperating with it.

The meeting addressed the unilateral actions taken by the Southern Transitional Council (STC) in the eastern governorates, as well as the good offices undertaken by the Saudi-led Coalition to Support Legitimacy, led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, aimed at de-escalation and restoring normal conditions in the two governorates.

Al-Alimi emphasized the need to adhere to the governing references of the transitional phase and to the approach of partnership among the various political components within the framework of the legitimate government alliance. He praised the efforts led by Saudi Arabia to calm tensions in Hadramowt and Al-Mahra, underscoring that the stability of the eastern governorates and the restoration of normal conditions are a vital requirement for Yemen’s security and stability, and a natural extension of regional security and global energy supplies.

For his part, U.S. Ambassador Steven Fagin reaffirmed Washington’s firm position in support of Yemen’s unity, stability, and territorial integrity. He also stressed the U.S.s’ commitment to the unity of the Presidential Leadership Council and the government, its strong partnership in counterterrorism efforts, its dedication to alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people, and its support for their aspirations at all levels.

The meeting also discussed bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and ways to strengthen and develop them across various fields. Al-Alimi expressed, on his own behalf and that of his fellow PLC members and the government, appreciation for the firm U.S. positions in support of the Yemeni state, including the U.S. decision to designate the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, efforts to counter weapons smuggling and financing networks linked to the Iranian regime, political support at the UN Security Council, and valued assistance for economic reform efforts.

President al-Alimi renewed his emphasis on the importance of continued active U.S. engagement alongside Yemen, its people, and its political leadership, to achieve their aspirations of restoring state institutions, security, stability, and peace.
