Guterres Urges G20 Leaders to Boost Peace Efforts in Yemen

Yemen Monitor/ Newsroom:

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged leaders of the G20 nations to leverage their political and economic influence to revitalize peace processes in conflict zones, foremost among them Yemen. He emphasized that the world can no longer bear more wars and crises.

Guterres made these remarks during a press conference ahead of the opening of the G20 summit, scheduled to be held in South Africa under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.” He stressed that major powers bear a real responsibility in supporting sustainable peaceful solutions.

Guterres clarified that the leaders of the group must clearly choose “peace based on respect for international law.” He pointed out that prolonged conflicts—including the war in Yemen—alongside climate and economic crises, have caused widespread suffering and burdened populations.

The Secretary-General’s call comes amidst the continued stagnation of the political process in Yemen, more than a decade after the war erupted, which was triggered by the Houthi group following their coup against state institutions in 2014. This period has seen intermittent rounds of negotiations that have so far failed to yield a comprehensive agreement to restore stability.

Earlier on Saturday, the G20 leaders’ summit commenced in Johannesburg, South Africa. This historic event, held for the first time on African soil, saw the attendance of representatives from 42 countries and international institutions, amid tight security measures and extensive media coverage, against a backdrop of complex global economic conditions.
