The city of Al-Mukalla, the provincial capital of Hadramawt in eastern Yemen, witnessed a widespread security alert today, Tuesday, coinciding with attempts by supporters of the dissolved Southern Transitional Council (STC) to stage demonstrations called for yesterday.
The governorate’s Security Committee issued a statement emphasizing that no rallies would be permitted without prior authorization, deeming any unauthorized gathering a threat to security and stability. The statement described the calls to mobilize as provocative, particularly given the sensitive timing the country is currently undergoing.
Video clips circulated by activists showed a heavy security deployment across various streets, while cameras documented crowds of citizens gathering in the Al-Sharj neighborhood of Al-Mukalla, holding photos of STC President Aidarus al-Zoubaidi and placards addressing public services.
In a related context, Member of the Presidential Leadership Council and Governor of Hadramawt, Salem Ahmed Al-Khanbashi, chaired an expanded meeting today in Al-Mukalla. The meeting brought together deputy governors, members of the Security Committee, and directors general of service facilities and relevant institutions to discuss security, military, and service developments, and to evaluate readiness levels in light of ongoing events.
During the meeting, attendees stressed the full readiness of the Armed Forces and all military and security formations to deter any escalation by the Houthi group, and to mobilize national capabilities in support of the battle to restore state institutions, end the coup, and consolidate security and stability in the governorate.
