The State of Qatar on Tuesday strongly condemned statements made by the Houthi group’s military spokesperson accusing Saudi Arabia of “besieging the Yemeni people” and imposing a maritime blockade, reaffirming its full solidarity with Riyadh and support for the measures it takes to safeguard its security and sovereignty.
In a statement, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “strongly condemns and denounces the statements of the Houthi military spokesperson accusing the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia of besieging the brotherly Yemeni people and banning maritime navigation.”
The ministry called on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in implementing the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216 on Yemen and Resolution 2722 concerning the protection of rights and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.
It stressed that freedom of navigation through international waterways is a fundamental principle of international law and is guaranteed under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The Qatari Foreign Ministry reiterated Qatar’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia, affirming its support for all measures the Kingdom takes to preserve its sovereignty and security.
The statement also emphasized that Saudi Arabia’s security is an integral part of the security of Qatar and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.
