Yemen Recalls Bacterially Contaminated Frozen Chicken from Markets

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The Yemeni Organization for Standardization, Metrology, and Quality Control announced on Monday that it has banned the entry of a frozen chicken product, “Frankfurt – Al Tarouti brand,” originating from Saudi Arabia. The product is also being recalled from markets after the Saudi Food and Drug Authority confirmed it was contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

The organization stated that while this bacterium can naturally live on skin or in the nose without harm, it becomes dangerous when transferred to food. Some strains of the bacteria produce heat-resistant toxins that cause rapid food poisoning with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. In severe cases, it can lead to skin infections or blood poisoning, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The organization urged consumers to immediately dispose of any quantities of the product they may have. It also stressed the importance of relevant authorities in governorates and customs ports to withdraw and dispose of the contaminated product to ensure public safety.

The organization also sent a letter to the Minister of Industry and Trade to instruct the removal of any remaining quantities from the markets, emphasizing the importance of protecting consumers from the health risks associated with this product.
