Microsoft Reports Red Sea Fiber Optic Outage

Yemen Monitor / New York / Reuters + Bloomberg:

On Saturday, Microsoft announced that Microsoft Azure users may experience increased latency due to multiple subsea fiber outages in the Red Sea.

In a service status update for its Azure service, the company said that traffic through the Middle East originating or terminating in Asia or Europe might face increased disruptions.

“Repairing underwater fiber outages can take some time, so we will continue to monitor, rebalance, and optimize routing to minimize the impact on customers in the meantime,” Microsoft said.

The Red Sea is a vital communications corridor, linking Europe to Africa and Asia via Egypt. Repairing subsea cables in the region can be difficult as the Houthis in Yemen continue to attack ships in the area.

The cause of the communications outage is not yet known.
