Al-Alimi Urges U.S. to Strengthen Partnership Against Houthis and Ensure Freedom of Navigation

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad Mohammed al-Alimi met on Thursday with U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Steven Fagin to discuss recent domestic and regional developments, as well as the support needed for the Yemeni government in advancing economic and humanitarian reforms.

According to the Yemeni presidency’s website, the talks addressed efforts to strengthen financial stability, support the national currency, and enhance security coordination to assist law enforcement authorities in counterterrorism efforts.

Al-Alimi praised the notable progress in Yemeni–U.S. relations, commending Washington’s clear stance toward the Houthis and their regional backers. He highlighted U.S. efforts in enforcing the ban on smuggled Iranian weapons, depriving the group of funding sources, and deterring threats to Yemen’s and the region’s security.

The council chairman stressed the importance of continued U.S. involvement in protecting international shipping and weakening the militia’s capabilities, noting that confronting current challenges requires close partnership between Yemen and both regional and international communities.

The two sides also discussed recent Houthi violations, including a campaign of arrests targeting UN and international organization employees, as well as the targeting of Yemeni activists ahead of the commemoration of the national revolution anniversaries.

For his part, Ambassador Fagin reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting the Presidential Leadership Council, the Yemeni government, and the Yemeni people. He praised the economic reforms that have helped stabilize the national currency and prevented the Houthis from exploiting the banking system.
