Lawyers’ Union Condemns Houthi Judge’s Detention of a Lawyer

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The Yemeni Lawyers’ Union in Sana’a has expressed its condemnation of a decision by a Houthi-controlled judge to imprison a lawyer for a week, calling it a flagrant violation of the law.
In a statement, the union said that Judge Abdulmajeed al-Amiri ordered lawyer Ahmed al-Shawish to be held in the court’s prison for one week. The union stressed that this action is an assault on rights and freedoms and is legally classified as a “deprivation of liberty” crime that requires investigation and accountability.
The union added that the incident reflects the “arrogance of some judges” in areas controlled by the group. It affirmed that it is monitoring the legal actions that will be taken against the judge, stating its readiness to escalate the situation if necessary.
The Lawyers’ Union noted that this incident is not isolated but is part of a growing series of violations and attacks against lawyers in Houthi-controlled areas by some judges or by the group’s supervisors. This threatens the standing of the profession and undermines justice.
The statement also pointed out that the attacks have not been limited to lawyers but have also targeted a number of judges themselves, who have been subjected to threats or assaults by influential individuals, reflecting the fragility of the judicial environment in the country.
