Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
A historic building in Haraz area, west of Sanaa, has collapsed due to heavy rainfall. This incident highlights the ongoing deterioration of Yemen’s archaeological and heritage sites amid deliberate neglect by the Houthi group.
This collapse adds to the cumulative losses suffered by the heritage of Sanaa and other regions. Dozens of historic buildings have been damaged in recent years, particularly in the Old City of Sanaa, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is suffering from a lack of maintenance and deteriorating infrastructure.
Archaeology experts have warned that the continued rain and climate fluctuations, in the absence of any intervention to protect the ancient monuments, threaten the loss of large parts of the country’s historical memory.
Haraz is one of Yemen’s most prominent mountainous landmarks. It was home to the Bani Sulayh dynasty in the 11th century AD and still retains significant monuments and features from that era.
UNESCO has included the site on its Tentative List under the official name “Jabal Haraz,” as one of the sites nominated to join the World Heritage List.
