Yemeni Foreign Minister: Moves at the Security Council to Issue a Resolution Against the Houthis

Yemen Monitor / Riyadh / Special:

On Sunday, the Yemeni Foreign Minister said that there are moves at the Security Council to issue a new resolution against the armed Houthi group.

Dr. Shaea Al-Zindani explained in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that some countries are convinced that UN Resolution 2216 is no longer applicable, and he expected that any new resolutions issued would complement it and aim to adopt unified measures against the Houthis. He affirmed that the government is working with flexibility and rationality with all efforts aimed at pulling Yemen out of its crisis and that it remains committed to the umbrella of international legitimacy.

Al-Zindani accused the Houthi group of seeking to obstruct the efforts of the UN Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, and push the country into a cycle of chaos. He stressed that the peace process is almost frozen due to Iran’s push for the group to reject peace and insist on sustaining the war.

On the economic front, Al-Zindani linked the recent improvement in the local currency exchange rate to the harmony between state institutions and the strict measures taken by the Central Bank against speculators. He noted that currency speculation was a significant challenge and that additional reform steps would be implemented soon. He added that the economic issue represents the cornerstone of achieving security and stability.

Al-Zindani confirmed that Yemen’s presence on the international stage is expanding, revealing that 70 ambassadors have been accredited to the legitimate government. He pointed out that several countries, such as Russia and India, have announced their intention to reopen their embassies and consulates in the temporary capital, Aden, soon, which reflects the strengthening of the legitimate government’s international standing.

The minister stressed the importance of the Saudi role in supporting Yemen in various development, humanitarian, and reconstruction fields, affirming that the Kingdom has priority in Yemeni foreign policy.

In another context, Al-Zindani commented on the seizure of a shipment of drones and advanced devices at the port of Aden coming from China. He stressed that relations with Beijing are strong and historical and that he informed the Chinese Chargé d’affaires that the Yemeni government is tracking the shipment to verify its source.
