Houthis Disrupt General People’s Congress Meeting in Sana’a

Yemen Monitor – Sana’a – Exclusive:

A well-informed source told Yemen Monitor on Saturday evening that Houthi armed forces disrupted a meeting of the General People’s Congress (GPC) leadership, which was being held at the Al-Mithaq Institute in the capital, Sana’a, under the chairmanship of Sadeq Amin Abu Ras.

According to the source, the meeting was convened to discuss preparations for the party’s anniversary celebration. However, Houthi forces stormed the venue and forced attendees to leave, warning against holding similar gatherings without prior coordination with them.

The source noted that no arrests were immediately reported following the incident, but there are indications that some party leaders may soon be placed under surveillance or house arrest.

This development comes in the wake of a Houthi-controlled military court’s announcement on Thursday sentencing Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh—the son of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and former commander of the Republican Guard—to death.

Ahmed Ali, who serves as deputy head of the GPC in Sana’a, has distanced himself from political life and was placed under house arrest in Abu Dhabi as per a UN Security Council resolution, due to his alleged role in facilitating the Houthi takeover of Sana’a in September 2014. Those sanctions were recently lifted.
