Young Man Killed During Protests Over Economic Deterioration in Hadhramaut

Yemen Monitor – Newsroom:

A young man was killed on Thursday in the city of Tarim, Hadhramaut Governorate (eastern Yemen), after being shot by security forces while dispersing angry protests over the worsening economic situation. The demonstrations were concentrated at the main entrance of the city, which connects several districts of Wadi Hadhramaut.

In a statement, Tarim Police said security forces began operations shortly after dawn prayers to reopen roads that had been blocked by protesters. The statement claimed that some demonstrators attacked security personnel by throwing stones and surrounding them.

The statement added that the forces fired a warning shot into the air to disperse the crowd, but the bullet struck one of the citizens. He was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

The police confirmed that Brigadier General Abdullah bin Hubaysh, Director-General of Security and Police in Wadi Hadhramaut, instructed his deputy, Brigadier General Ali Faraj Al-Sa’i, to launch an urgent and thorough investigation into the incident, in coordination with relevant authorities, to ensure transparency and accountability.

Tarim Police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property, urging citizens to express their demands peacefully and to avoid violence or escalation.

Since Wednesday evening, various cities in Hadhramaut and Aden have witnessed an unprecedented wave of public escalation amid the severe collapse of basic services—chief among them electricity and water—triggering angry protests, clashes, road blockades, and gunfire, with growing warnings that the situation could spiral out of control.
