Hadhramaut Security Committee Warns of “Infiltrators” in Protests and Vows Firm Response

Yemen Monitor – Newsroom:

In response to escalating public protests in Mukalla over poor services, the Security Committee of Hadhramaut governorate has warned of disruptive elements trying to infiltrate the demonstrations. The committee affirmed its readiness to deal with any threat to the region’s security and stability.

During an emergency meeting on Thursday led by Major General Talib Saeed Bargash, Deputy Head of the Security Committee and Commander of the Second Military Region, the committee discussed the situation on the ground. There are fears that the popular movement is being exploited by groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Houthis.

The committee revealed it has monitored the movements of armed elements trying to cause chaos. According to the committee, some of these individuals are affiliated with extremist groups and are distributing money to incite young people to riot and carry out attacks. The latest incident involved a shooting attack targeting military patrols.

The committee emphasized that it has made significant progress in intelligence work, stating that it is closely monitoring the movements of prominent leaders in these armed groups and working to dismantle threats before they occur.

The Second Military Region command stressed that any attempt to undermine the security of the Hadhramaut coast will be met with a firm response and that demands from the public will not be allowed to be turned into a tool for chaos.

The Security Committee urged residents to exercise restraint and to educate young people about the dangers of being drawn into calls for chaos, blocking roads, or gathering in sensitive areas. It warned of legal consequences for anyone involved in such activities.

The security statement concluded by highlighting the recent shooting at military forces during a protest, calling it proof of the danger posed by the involved parties and the urgent need for caution and firmness.

Mukalla and Aden have seen unprecedented public protests since Wednesday evening due to a severe collapse in basic services, especially electricity and water. These protests have included clashes, road blockages, and shootings, amid warnings that the situation could spiral out of control.
