Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi departed the temporary capital, Aden, on Thursday for an official visit to Saudi Arabia aimed at mobilizing political and economic support to help the government confront mounting challenges.
According to Yemen’s official news agency Saba, a source in the presidential office said Al-Alimi will hold consultations in Riyadh with regional and international partners to discuss developments in Yemen and the wider region. The talks will also focus on the necessary efforts to support economic and service-sector reforms and to alleviate the humanitarian impact of what the source described as “terrorist attacks by the Iranian-backed Houthi group.”
The source noted that the visit will include multilateral meetings to explore ways of strengthening international support for the Yemeni people and their legitimate leadership, restoring state institutions, establishing security and stability, and ensuring the safety of maritime navigation in the Red Sea amid escalating Houthi threats.
The source reaffirmed the Presidential Leadership Council’s confidence in the government’s ability to face these challenges and meet citizens’ aspirations for stability, peace, and livelihood security.
Al-Alimi’s departure comes about a month and a half after his return to Aden alongside newly appointed Prime Minister Saleh Salem bin Buraik, amid worsening economic conditions and the government’s failure to provide effective solutions. This situation has been exacerbated by the ongoing financial division imposed by the Houthis, the suspension of oil exports following Houthi attacks on export terminals last October, and the continued collapse of the national currency in areas controlled by the internationally recognized government.
