The Yemeni Cabinet held a meeting on Tuesday, chaired by Prime Minister Salem bin Breik, in the interim capital Aden. The meeting focused on discussing the latest economic and service developments, ways to address the decline of the national currency, and several vital issues on the agenda.
At the outset of the session, the Prime Minister emphasized that the government is working in close coordination with the Presidential Leadership Council, the Central Bank of Yemen, and international partners to confront current economic challenges. He stressed the necessity of moving from reaction to action and enhancing institutional performance efficiency to positively impact citizens’ lives.
Regarding the economic situation, the Cabinet discussed coordinated plans with the Central Bank to counter the deteriorating exchange rate, alleviate living burdens, and expand the base of public resources. They underscored the importance of controlling financial performance, combating corruption, and enhancing transparency and accountability.
On military and political developments, the Cabinet heard briefings from the Ministers of Defense, Interior, and Foreign Affairs on the latest field updates and the continuous violations by the Houthi group, especially concerning economic and security aspects.
Regarding combating arms smuggling, the Cabinet reiterated its call for the international community to take a firm stance on Iranian support for Houthi militias. They noted the interception of a sophisticated 750-ton arms shipment, including drones and air defense systems, in blatant violation of Security Council resolutions.
Concerning the designation of the Houthis as a terrorist organization, the Cabinet discussed mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of international sanctions. They emphasized the importance of balance in this matter to avoid affecting the smooth flow of essential goods to Houthi-controlled areas, thereby preserving the humanitarian situation.
In terms of international cooperation, the Cabinet approved a set of measures linked to the outcomes of the Presidential Leadership Council Chairman’s visit to Russia, aiming to expand bilateral cooperation between the two countries in various fields.
Regarding education and scholarships, the Cabinet directed the Minister of Higher Education to prepare a comprehensive report on scholarships and foreign grants to ensure transparency and standardize fair distribution mechanisms for study opportunities.
The Cabinet also approved an amendment to Article 39 of the executive regulations of the Law on Regulating Fishing and Exploiting Aquatic Organisms, after reviewing observations from relevant authorities.
Finally, the Cabinet reviewed a report from the Minister of Electricity on the challenges facing the energy sector and efforts to improve services. They stressed the importance of coordination between central and local authorities to ensure optimal resource utilization and improved basic services.
