Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The parliamentary committee tasked with a field visit to Marib governorate (eastern Yemen), led by MP Abdullah Al-Maqtari and including MPs Ali Al-Hanq and Mohammed Al-Ashbi, is continuing its oversight duties. This is part of Parliament’s plan to reactivate its role in monitoring government performance after years of inactivity.
Today, the committee held meetings with leaders of oil and gas companies in the governorate, during which they discussed financial and administrative reports and the challenges facing operations in the sector. The committee emphasized the importance of revitalizing the oil sector given its vital role in supporting the national economy and generating revenues.
As part of its visit, the committee was briefed on academic developments at Sebaa Region University. They met with the university’s leadership and learned about the significant expansion of its educational infrastructure, which currently accommodates over 19,000 students from 21 governorates. The visit also included discussions on postgraduate programs and the university’s preparations to graduate its first batch from the College of Medicine this year.
The committee also conducted field visits to the Al-Jafina and Al-Suwayda IDP camps, where they observed the extent of humanitarian challenges in both camps, amidst complaints about the absence of support from a number of international organizations.
The committee praised the efforts of the local authority in Marib in addressing the increasing service and humanitarian challenges.
It is worth noting that the Yemeni House of Representatives approved the formation of three field parliamentary committees in early July to visit several governorates. Their purpose is to evaluate the financial and administrative performance of local authorities and review the revenues of public institutions, in a first step towards reclaiming its oversight role.
