Yemeni President Reveals Houthi Plot to Assassinate UN Envoy

Yemen Monitor / Aden | Exclusive

Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad Al-Alimi announced on Tuesday that a Houthi-affiliated cell had attempted to assassinate UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg.

The announcement came during a meeting with EU ambassadors in Aden, the country’s interim capital. Neither the Houthi group nor the UN envoy has issued a comment on Al-Alimi’s statement.

According to Al-Alimi, the cell was uncovered in recent weeks and was also responsible for the killing of a World Food Programme employee in Taiz, along with the assassinations of several leaders, activists, journalists, and innocent civilians—in addition to its failed attempt to target the UN envoy.

Back in June, Al-Alimi had revealed that security forces had uncovered a terrorist network led by Amjad Khaled, former commander of the Transport Brigade, which he said was directly linked to Houthi leadership.

He stated that the Houthis had used this network to destabilize liberated areas and manipulate international perceptions regarding the government’s ability to maintain control over its territories.
