Houthis Confirm Arrest of Hisham Sharaf at Aden Airport, Demand His Immediate Release

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Houthi group has confirmed that Hisham Sharaf, the former foreign minister in the unrecognized Houthi-run government in Sanaa, has been detained by authorities loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognized government while at Aden International Airport.

In a statement to the Houthi-run Saba News Agency, Abdulaziz bin Habtoor, a member of the group’s Supreme Political Council, described the arrest as a “blatant violation of the right to freedom of movement and travel,” asserting that it contradicts international laws and conventions that guarantee civil rights.

Bin Habtoor called the action a “dangerous escalation” in the Yemeni crisis and held the Aden-based government fully responsible for Sharaf’s safety, demanding his unconditional and immediate release.

He also urged international human rights organizations to respond swiftly and condemn what he referred to as a “criminal act” against a civilian figure, stressing that such practices undermine prospects for de-escalation and further complicate the country’s already fragile political situation.
