Six Sailors Rescued, Search Continues for Missing After Houthi Attack Off Yemen
Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
Rescue vessels and a security team have launched an emergency mission to evacuate the crew of the cargo ship “Eternity C,” which was attacked by Houthis off Yemen’s western coast. This incident occurred just days after another Greek-managed vessel sank in a similar fashion.
The EU’s Red Sea mission, Aspides, reported that six crew members from the “Eternity C” were rescued after the Houthis sank the ship off the coast of Yemen. Nineteen others remain missing.
The attack took place 50 nautical miles southwest of Hudaidah port. It involved unmanned boats and rockets fired from manned speedboats, leading to the sinking of the vessel. The “Eternity C” had a crew of 22, mostly Filipinos, along with one Russian.
This marks the first fatal incident since last June in the series of attacks targeting ships in the Red Sea, bringing the total number of deaths in these operations to six sailors so far.
In parallel, Houthi military media broadcast new footage showing the targeting of another cargo ship named “Magic Seas.” This vessel was completely sunk after an attack carried out on Sunday. The Houthis claimed responsibility, stating the ship was linked to Israeli interests.
These attacks follow a period of several months of calm, bringing renewed concerns about the disruption of global trade in one of the most sensitive maritime passages: the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The U.S. has strongly condemned what it described as an “unjustified terrorist attack” on civilian cargo ships, accusing the Houthis of threatening freedom of navigation and regional economic security. The U.S. affirmed it would take necessary measures to protect maritime routes from any threats.
The U.S. State Department noted that these attacks reflect the continuing Iranian threat through its proxies in the region, despite a relative calm since President Donald Trump’s announcement last May of a halt to military operations in Yemen. This pause followed undisclosed Omani mediation, which included a commitment from both sides to avoid directly targeting US vessels.
