IMO Secretary-General Condemns Houthi Attacks in Red Sea, Affirms Violation of Freedom of Navigation
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has strongly condemned the ongoing attacks on vessels in the Red Sea. He emphasized that these actions constitute a blatant violation of international law and freedom of navigation, posing a severe threat to maritime safety in the region.
Dominguez clarified that recent attacks on commercial vessels in the area pose a significant risk to the freedom of navigation and will negatively impact global maritime trade.
He specifically highlighted the incident involving the cargo ship “Eternity C,” which was attacked off the Yemeni coast, resulting in the deaths of four crew members and injuries to others. He noted that the attack involved a drone and a speedboat.
In a related development, the Houthi group claimed responsibility for an attack on the bulk carrier “MV Magic Seas” in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a strategic waterway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
Dominguez stated that such attacks are in clear defiance of international law and negatively affect the freedom of navigation in the region. He called for immediate action to counter these attacks and ensure the security of navigation in the area.
He affirmed that the IMO is working diligently to guarantee maritime safety in the region and will continue to collaborate with all relevant parties to prevent such attacks in the future.
