In a deeply emotional and solemn scene, the Yemeni community in Turkey bid farewell on Saturday to the body of Fouad Al-Himyari, the renowned Yemeni poet, writer, and political activist, who was laid to rest at Kilyos Cemetery in Istanbul after funeral prayers were held at the Ihsan Murat Bilgiç Mosque, one of the city’s prominent mosques.
A large crowd of Yemeni expatriates participated in the funeral, joined by notable members of Arab and Muslim communities, led by Yemen’s ambassador to Turkey, Mohammed Tariq, all coming together to honor a man whose voice had long echoed in the hearts of Yemenis — through both poetry and conviction.
Al-Himyari passed away on Friday afternoon, after a long battle with kidney failure, closing a chapter rich in cultural and political struggle. His death has triggered widespread mourning among Yemenis both inside and outside the country.
He was known for his powerful writings and staunch support for freedom and justice, remaining a voice of conscience and resilience despite illness and exile.
With his passing, Yemen loses one of its most prominent intellectual and humanitarian figures, yet his creative legacy will endure in the memory of those who knew him, read his work, and walked the path he helped forge.
