Yemen Affirms its Arab Identity from Baghdad: We Will Remain a Support for the Nation’s Issues, and the Houthis are a Permanent Threat
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
In a speech before the Arab Summit in Baghdad, the Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, affirmed that Yemen will remain a support for Arab causes, reiterating its full commitment to the Palestinian people’s right to an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He also warned against the escalating threats targeting Arab national security, foremost of which are Iranian interventions through the support of terrorist groups such as the “Houthi militia.”
Al-Alimi pointed out that the exceptional circumstances the region is going through require translating the decisions of Arab summits into actions, especially in the face of cross-border militias that threaten international navigation and destabilize countries. He held Iran responsible for supporting the Houthis in their ten-year war against the Yemeni people, which he described as an “existential battle.”
The Yemeni President revealed the Houthis’ violations, which include targeting civilians, recruiting children, and kidnapping humanitarian aid. He called on the Arab League to vote on designating the group as a “foreign terrorist organization” and to strengthen sanctions against it, stressing that a unified Arab stance would send a decisive message to support international legitimacy and block the way for rogue militias.
Al-Alimi expressed Yemen’s thanks to the countries of the Coalition to Support Legitimacy, led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, for their role in supporting Yemeni resilience. He also praised Egypt’s humanitarian stance towards Yemeni displaced persons and congratulated Syria on the lifting of US sanctions, considering it a historic achievement under Saudi leadership.
He concluded his speech by linking peace and economic recovery, calling for Arab initiatives to aid the afflicted and rebuild Yemen and affected countries, stressing that Yemen – despite the war – will remain a guardian of Arab constants and a strategic depth for the nation.
Earlier today, the thirty-fourth summit of the League of Arab States began in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, amidst the continued Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip for 19 months, in light of an unprecedented exacerbation of the humanitarian crisis and continuous escalation.
This summit comes after the emergency meeting held in Cairo last March, where Arab leaders approved a plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, considered an alternative to a US proposal put forward by the previous president, which stipulated the displacement of the Strip’s population and placing it under Washington’s supervision.
