Massive Fire Devours Carpentry Workshop in Tarim Amid Demands to Strengthen Civil Defense Capabilities

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

A massive fire broke out in a carpentry and furniture workshop in Tarim city, Hadramout Governorate, eastern Yemen, resulting in significant material losses.

According to local sources, the fire started in the workshop located in the Al-Muhaidhara area due to an electrical short circuit, with the flames completely consuming the workshop’s contents.

Eyewitnesses indicated that residents made great efforts to extinguish the fire using desalination water tanks, amid a delay in the arrival of civil defense teams, which arrived about two hours after the fire broke out.

This incident comes in light of the recurrence of similar fires in Tarim city, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen civil defense capabilities in the city.

Tarim lacks a civil defense center equipped with the necessary equipment and personnel to respond quickly to such incidents, despite containing many carpentry workshops and factories that increase the likelihood of fires.

Residents and activists called on local authorities to provide a fire truck and an equipped civil defense center in the city, stressing that the delay in responding to such incidents endangers lives and property.

It is worth noting that Tarim city has witnessed several similar fires in recent months, which necessitates urgent intervention from the concerned authorities to strengthen the civil defense infrastructure and provide the necessary capabilities to deal with such disasters.
