Renewed Protests in Aden Demand Electricity Sector Reform

Yemen Monitor/Aden/Special:

Popular protests are escalating in Yemen’s interim capital, Aden, due to the ongoing and worsening electricity crisis. The city suffers from prolonged power outages lasting many hours, interspersed with limited periods of operation, amid a sharp decline in living standards due to the currency collapse and rising prices.

The Public Electricity Corporation in Aden reported the resumption of operations at the “President” power plant after a limited supply of crude oil was secured, warning that continued operation depends on the flow of fuel. It appealed to relevant authorities to provide sufficient supplies.

Angry voices rose through demonstrations in the Sheikh Othman and Al-Mansoura districts, where protesters blocked roads and set tires ablaze to protest the continuous power outages, especially with the summer heat wave.

It is noteworthy that Aden relies on stations that operate on diesel, fuel oil, and crude oil. However, it suffers from fuel shortages and dilapidated infrastructure, amid accusations of administrative corruption and political infighting that hinder radical solutions.
