Yemeni-Egyptian Talks to Address Issues Facing the Yemeni Community

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Ambassador of Yemen to the Arab Republic of Egypt, Khaled Mahfoudh Bahah, discussed several issues concerning the Yemeni community residing in Egypt with Egypt’s Assistant Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs and Egyptians Abroad, Ambassador Tamer El-Meligy.

The talks addressed the situation of Yemenis stranded in the Gaza Strip, with Ambassador Bahah stressing the need to facilitate their evacuation in cooperation with Egyptian and Qatari authorities.

The two sides also discussed the decision to close Yemeni schools in Egypt, a move that threatens the future of more than 6,000 Yemeni students.

Ambassador Bahah pointed to the high costs of security clearances for Yemeni newcomers and the impact on patients and students, in addition to delays in security approvals for medical fellowship students.

The talks also touched on the situation of Yemenis sentenced in Egypt, including a request to commute the death sentences of six Yemenis and to allow others to serve the remainder of their sentences in Yemeni prisons, based on the security agreement signed between the two countries.

For his part, Ambassador El-Meligy reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the Yemeni people and pledged to address the relevant authorities to resolve the issues raised.
