U.S. Accuses Chinese Company of Providing Houthis with Imagery to Target Warships

Yemen Monitor / Washington / Reuters:
The U.S. State Department on Thursday accused the Chinese satellite company Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co. Ltd. of directly supporting attacks by the Iran-aligned Houthi group on US interests, calling the involvement “unacceptable.”
The Financial Times had earlier reported that the Chinese military-linked satellite firm was providing the Houthis with imagery used to target U.S. and international warships in the Red Sea.
“We can confirm reports that Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co. Ltd. is directly supporting the Iran-backed Houthis’ terrorist attacks on U.S. interests,” State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said during a regular press briefing.
“China continuously tries to portray itself as a peacemaker on the world stage,” Bruce added, “yet it is clear that Beijing and Chinese companies are providing significant economic and technological support to regimes like Russia, North Korea, Iran, and their proxies.”
Bruce stated that the company’s assistance to the Houthis has persisted despite U.S. diplomatic outreach to Beijing regarding the issue.
“Their continued involvement is unacceptable,” she said.
Liu Pengyu, spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington, said he was unaware of the situation and had no comment. The company has not yet responded to a request for comment.
China remains the USs’ primary strategic rival, and this latest accusation comes amid an intensifying trade standoff between the two economic and military powers. President Donald Trump recently escalated the conflict by significantly increasing tariffs on Chinese imports.
