Yemen Urges UN to Bolster Response to Displacement and Irregular Migration

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Yemeni Prime Minister Shayea al-Zindani called on the United Nations on Saturday to intensify its efforts to address issues of displacement and irregular migration in Yemen, in light of the worsening humanitarian challenges.

Al-Zindani’s remarks came during his meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Barham Salih, on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, where the two sides discussed the situation of displaced persons and ways to enhance the humanitarian response.

Al-Zindani stressed the necessity of increasing support provided to the displaced and addressing the refugee file and its associated challenges, praising the role played by the UNHCR in this context.

He also emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination between the Yemeni government and the Commission, and supporting the capacities of national institutions to contribute to finding sustainable solutions for displacement and irregular migration issues.

Official data indicates the arrival of approximately 200 African migrants to the country daily, with movements occurring between governorates in an unorganized manner and without legal procedures, taking advantage of the exceptional circumstances Yemen is undergoing.

This comes as part of a continuous flow of hundreds of migrants arriving from Horn of Africa countries; while some journeys succeed in arriving safely, others end in tragedy at sea due to the risks and crashing waves.
