UN Envoy Warns: Houthis May Drag Yemen into Wider Regional Conflict
Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has expressed grave concern over recent military escalation in the region, warning against any steps that could drag Yemen into a wider regional conflict.
In an official statement, Grundberg stressed the need to exercise maximum restraint, stating that after more than a decade of devastating conflict, Yemen “cannot afford to once again become an arena for external escalation.” He warned that any military actions that undermine the chances for peace would only increase the suffering of civilians.
The UN envoy pointed out that there is a “real, albeit fragile, opportunity to move forward toward a comprehensive political process under UN auspices, ending the conflict and placing Yemen on a path to a just and sustainable peace,” affirming that the country’s future must be built through this process and not through the repercussions of regional confrontations.
The United Nations remains committed to supporting the Yemeni parties in reaching a political solution to the conflict, emphasizing that the interests of the Yemeni people must be placed above all other considerations.
Grundberg’s warning comes days after the Houthi group engaged in the ongoing war in support of Iran, which has been subjected to intense US-Israeli attacks since February 28, resulting in thousands of casualties, as well as the assassination of political and military leaders, most notably former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the ministers of defense and intelligence, and the commanders of the Revolutionary Guard and Basij forces.
