Yemeni Water Minister Discusses Groundwater Mapping for Taiz With UNICEF

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Yemeni Minister of Water and Environment, Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, discussed today with representatives from UNICEF and experts from Acacia Water the results of a technical report regarding data collection and gap analysis for preparing groundwater maps in the city of Taiz.

The Ministry of Water and Environment stated that the meeting, held via video conference, reviewed the outputs of the preliminary report on the assessment of water resources in the Upper Wadi Rasyan basin, aimed at supporting sustainable water management planning in the city.

The statement quoted Minister Al-Sharjabi saying that the report represents a “crucial scientific foundation” for understanding the reality of water resources in the region, given the challenges Taiz faces due to limited water sources and damage to infrastructure caused by the conflict.

He explained that the Ministry intends to work on implementing the recommendations included in the report, which involve:

  • Using remote sensing technologies.
  • Conducting field verification of water levels and quality.
  • Developing hydrogeological models to study groundwater movement.

He added that these efforts will contribute to creating an accurate database and digital maps of groundwater, enhancing the efficiency of water resource management and improving the planning process for providing water to residents.

Furthermore, Al-Sharjabi expressed his appreciation for the technical support provided by UNICEF and Acacia Water experts, emphasizing that this cooperation represents a first step within a broader plan to enhance water security and improve residents’ access to water services in the Taiz Governorate.
