First Shipment of Gas Arrives in Socotra After Supply Halt Since UAE Departure

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen announced today the arrival of an emergency shipment of household gas to the archipelago province of Socotra. This brings hope for alleviating a severe crisis that the island has been experiencing since the departure of the UAE at the beginning of last month.

The program stated that the first batch of household gas (LPG) cylinders has arrived, with a total quantity of 380,000 liters. This effort is part of initiatives aimed at mitigating the living and economic challenges faced by the residents of the archipelago.

It clarified that this step comes to meet the increasing needs of the population, improve the overall supply situation, and ensure the stability of essential services related to the daily lives of citizens in the province.

Socotra has been experiencing a crisis in household gas and petroleum products since UAE-affiliated companies operating on the island announced the end of their presence in early January of this year.

The island of Socotra had been under UAE administration since 2017, with the presence of official Yemeni authorities being nominal. Subsequently, it came under the control of the Southern Transitional Council and was administered by the UAE. Companies affiliated with Abu Dhabi provided services to citizens in various sectors, such as electricity, fuel, education, health, aviation, and others.
