ICRC Welcomes Agreement to Release Thousands of Prisoners in Yemen, Calls for Immediate Implementation

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has welcomed the preliminary agreement reached between the Yemeni government and the Houthi group to release thousands of prisoners and detainees from both sides. The organization called for translating the agreement into tangible action that preserves the dignity of detainees and ensures their safe return to their families.

In a press statement, the ICRC said that the concerned parties have committed to releasing the detainees and transferring them back to their home areas. The committee stressed the importance of honoring these commitments without delay in order to alleviate the suffering of families and uphold human rights in accordance with international humanitarian law.

In a separate comment, the Head of the ICRC Delegation in Yemen, Christine Cipolla, stated that the organization is “ready and determined” to carry out the release and transfer operations in a manner that guarantees the safety and dignity of the detainees. She also emphasized the need for cooperation from all parties to identify the names of those included in the agreement.
