Yemeni Deputy Foreign Minister Attacks STC Moves and Warns of Southern Yemen’s Fragmentation

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Yemeni Deputy Foreign Minister Mustafa Al-Nu’man, in statements to Al Arabiya channel, affirmed that the moves by the Southern Transitional Council (STC) harm state institutions and strike at the very core of legitimacy.

Al-Nu’man explained that the STC has rebelled against the government despite being part of it, calling for its return to dialogue and commitment to legitimacy.

He indicated that the entire authority deals with the STC as a partner entity within the framework of legitimacy, expressing his hope that the STC would understand this reality. However, he emphasized that some of the STC’s moves are made hastily and without foresight, and that the positions of some of its affiliated ministers are ridiculous and taken under pressure, complicating the political situation in the south.

The Deputy Foreign Minister conveyed his warning about the possibility of southern Yemen’s secession and the emergence of a small statelet akin to Somaliland, noting that the STC’s attempts to impose a new reality in Hadramawt increase the suffering of the population while the Houthis reap the benefits of these moves.

Al-Nu’man pointed out that Saudi Arabia is showing great patience with influential parties in southern Yemen and works to maintain continuous communication with them, stressing that Riyadh is the most affected by what happens on the ground. He warned that its anger could lead to a strong reaction.

In a related context, the Deputy Foreign Minister revealed that the President of the STC, Aidarous Al-Zubaidi, attempted to communicate with the U.S. government but received no response, reflecting the STC’s international isolation at the official level.

He added that international organizations are still able to continue their work in southern Yemen despite tensions, indicating the persistence of humanitarian support and international efforts.
