The Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee of UNESCO, during its ongoing 20th session in New Delhi, announced the inclusion of the “Hadrami Dan Session” (Jalsat Al-Dan Al-Hadrami) “type of Yemeni songs” on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This decision culminates years of sustained efforts, finally achieving a significant milestone that reflects the value of this ancient Yemeni heritage.
Muhammad Jumaih, Yemen’s Ambassador to UNESCO, congratulated the artistic and popular communities in Hadramowt governorate, as well as all citizens of the Republic of Yemen, on this major achievement. He affirmed that the “Hadrami Dan” is eminently deserving of this recognition, following a long and diligent process to reach this goal.
Ambassador Jumaih also extended his thanks to the Ministry of Culture and its staff, and the National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science. He offered special gratitude to the Hadramowt Culture Foundation, which undertook the preparation and financing of the nomination file. He expressed his appreciation to the Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee, its Chairperson (India’s Ambassador to UNESCO, Vishal Sharma), the committee members, its secretariat, and the Evaluation Body experts for their efforts in ensuring the file’s success.
The inscription of the “Hadrami Dan” on the UNESCO list is considered an important step toward preserving this Yemeni cultural heritage and introducing the world to its artistic and social significance, thereby strengthening Yemen’s position on the global cultural map.
