Government Report: 40,000 Children Suffer from Malnutrition and Face Death Risk from Cold in Marib

Yemen Monitor / Marib / Exclusive:

A recent government report revealed that more than 40,000 children in displacement camps in Marib governorate are suffering from malnutrition and face the risk of death due to severe cold in dilapidated camps that lack the most basic protections.

The “Winter Needs” report, issued by the Executive Unit for IDPs, stated that more than 33,108 children suffer from Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM), while 7,216 children face Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), making them the most vulnerable to cold-related complications, disease, and the risk of death.

The report added that 122 camps lack primary health services, and patients within them face the risk of complications due to gaps in healthcare services.

The report indicated that 59,082 displaced families, including thousands of children, live in dilapidated tents that do not protect them from the bitter cold, amid a significant gap in shelter materials. The camps urgently need 69,110 new tents, winter clothing, and 59,082 blankets.

The report clarified that economic deterioration and the lack of sufficient support place 535,926 individuals, including children, in the category of immediate need for food, while the food gap remains at 28,653 metric tons.

The Executive Unit called on international and humanitarian organizations to launch an urgent intervention to protect children from the cold wave and provide food, treatment, and shelter materials. It emphasized that any delay would exacerbate health risks and could lead to increased mortality rates among children in the camps.
