Protest Demands End to Illegal Levies and Improved Services in Abyan Governorate

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
ABYAN – Dozens of people in Abyan governorate (southeastern Yemen) took to the streets today, Saturday, in a protest demanding an end to illegal levies, the dismissal of corrupt officials, and the improvement of services in the governorate, which is under the control of the Southern Transitional Council (STC).
The demonstrators held banners calling for an end to unlawful taxes and collections and the removal of corrupt individuals, while condemning the deterioration of public services. They stressed the need to direct the governorate’s revenues toward development projects and the rehabilitation of infrastructure.
The protesters marched through several streets of Zinjibar city, the governorate’s capital, chanting slogans demanding the regular payment of salaries for both civilian and military personnel. They affirmed their commitment to continuing peaceful demonstrations and escalation until the demands of Abyan’s residents are met.
Demonstrators also condemned the widespread chaos and manipulation in the governorate, particularly criticizing the numerous security checkpoints scattered along the international road, which they said have become a suffocating obstacle to commercial traffic and movement.
Abyan is currently experiencing poor service conditions, compounded by security chaos and the rampant imposition of illegal levies, all under the control and domination of the STC.
