From Manama… Yemeni Government Activates the Abductees File and Opens New Support Channels with Britain

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The Yemeni government has called for increased international pressure on the Houthis to deal seriously and responsibly with the file of abductees and detainees, emphasizing the importance of moving this stalled humanitarian file that has been unresolved for years.

This came during a meeting in the Bahraini capital, Manama, between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs, Shaye’ Al-Zindani, and the Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Pierre Krähenbühl, where efforts aimed at advancing the detainee exchange process were discussed.

Al-Zindani stressed the necessity for the international community to act seriously to implement UN Security Council resolutions, foremost among them Resolution 2216, pointing out that international laxity has enabled Iran to expand its interference in Yemeni affairs and allowed the Houthis to persist in their violations.

He also emphasized that the international community’s silence regarding the crimes of the Houthis represents a threat to the global system, calling for support to the Yemeni government politically, economically, and militarily to achieve a just and sustainable peace based on restoring state institutions and respecting international law.

Also, on the sidelines of the forum, the Foreign Minister met with his British counterpart, Yvette Cooper, where they reviewed the historical and strong relations between the two countries and ways to enhance them in various fields.

Al-Zindani expressed the Yemeni government’s appreciation for British support to the Presidential Leadership Council and for humanitarian and development efforts in Yemen, praising London’s support for efforts to enhance the capabilities of the Coast Guard and maritime security.

For her part, the British Foreign Secretary affirmed her country’s continued support for the Yemeni government and the Presidential Leadership Council, and its backing for economic and administrative reforms aimed at achieving stability, development, and improving living conditions in the country.
