A Powerful Low-Pressure System Has Struck the City of Aden, Causing Heavy Rains, Widespread Damage, And Flight Diversions

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Since dawn on Tuesday, the city of Aden has been experiencing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds as a result of a powerful low-pressure system affecting its southern coasts. The city recorded about 70 mm of rainfall, leading to destructive flash floods and significant material damage.

Local residents reported that the rain began at 2:30 a.m., with expectations that the weather system would expand to affect broader areas of the governorate in the coming hours. The rain caused the bridge connecting Khormaksar and Al-Mansoura districts to be cut off due to rising water levels, and several vehicles were stalled after being swamped by the floods.

In Al-Aidaroos area of the Crater district, the floods caused the roofs of some houses to collapse, prompting the intervention of ambulance and civil defense teams to rescue residents. In the districts of Al-Mu’alla, Al-Tawahi, and Crater, the flash floods swept away a number of cars, adding to the scale of the damage.

Due to the deteriorating weather conditions, two Yemenia Airways flights arriving from Cairo were unable to land and were diverted to Djibouti, according to flight tracking applications.

These developments come at a time when Yemen’s southern coasts are experiencing unusual weather activity, which calls for caution and preparedness from both the relevant authorities and citizens.
