Statement Condemns Assault on Yemen Today TV Correspondent in Aden, Calls for Protection of Journalists

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The National Organization of Yemeni Journalists “Sada” has condemned the assault on Alaa Al-Salal, a correspondent for Yemen Today TV, while he was performing his journalistic duties in Crater district of the interim capital, Aden. His personal camera was confiscated, which constitutes a blatant violation of press and media freedom.

The organization described the incident as a serious threat to the safety of journalists amidst a media environment fraught with dangers and repeated violations. It stressed that silence regarding such violations encourages further impunity and undermines the climate of media freedoms in Yemen.

“Sada” called on the competent authorities in Aden to open an urgent and transparent investigation to uncover all circumstances of the incident, pursue and hold accountable those responsible, and take clear measures to protect journalists and enable them to perform their duties freely and safely.

The organization condemned the continued assaults on media professionals, urging all local and international human rights and journalistic bodies to show solidarity with colleague Alaa Al-Salal and to press for the exposure and accountability of those involved in the crime, in order to preserve freedom of expression and the right of journalists to work without threat.
