Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The United Kingdom has welcomed the extension of the mandate for the United Nations Mission to support the Hudaidah Agreement (UNMHA) until January 2026, emphasizing the importance of ongoing UN work in Yemen. This statement was made by Ambassador Barbara Woodward, the UK’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, following the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2786.

Woodward clarified that the UK appreciates the efforts of its colleagues on the Council during the negotiations that led to the extension. She stressed the close cooperation with the UN to review ways to enhance the efficiency, cohesion, and coordination of UN missions in Yemen.

She added that the UK is preparing to lead future discussions on options for UN operations in Hudaidah as the current mandate approaches its end. This includes evaluating the feasibility of continuing or terminating the mission to ensure an effective response to the realities on the ground.

Woodward reaffirmed her country’s commitment to ensuring the UN’s ability to operate through its missions in Yemen, highlighting the importance of supporting humanitarian needs, promoting long-term stability, and preserving space for a future UN-led peace process.

In conclusion, the British envoy noted continued cooperation with the UN Special Envoy and regional and Yemeni stakeholders to achieve these goals, as reported by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
