Security Council Prepares to Vote on Extending UN Mission to Support Hudaidah Agreement

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The UN Security Council is scheduled to vote on Monday morning on a draft resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission to Support the Hudaidah Agreement (UNMHA) for six and a half months.

The draft resolution, drafted by the United Kingdom, includes a comprehensive review of the UN mission on how to enhance its efficiency and structural cohesion and improve coordination among UN missions in Yemen.

The draft resolution aims to enrich the Council’s deliberations on the future of the mission when its next mandate is renewed, while keeping the option of ending its mission under consideration.

The U.S. expressed its desire to end the mission, emphasizing that the Redeployment Coordination Committee “has become ineffective.” Meanwhile, other Council members, such as Russia, stressed the importance of the mission’s role in achieving stability and facilitating humanitarian aid access.

In a related context, the Council will vote on Tuesday afternoon on another draft resolution extending until January 15, 2026, the period for the Secretary-General’s monthly reports on Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

The draft resolution, co-drafted by Greece and the US, was short and direct, merely recalling all relevant previous resolutions and expanding the scope of reporting requirements.

In this regard, the Houthi group renewed its attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea on July 6 and 7, drawing widespread international condemnation.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, condemned the attacks and called on the Houthis to de-escalate, while Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned these attacks.
