Israeli media reported on Tuesday that authorities temporarily closed airspace after a missile was launched from Yemeni territory. This incident brought back an atmosphere of tension and fear to Israeli cities, particularly Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and their surroundings.
The spokesperson for the Israeli Occupation Forces announced that the air force detected the launch and successfully intercepted the missile using the “Hetz” (Arrow) missile defense system. It is not yet known if the attack caused any material or human damage.
Activists on social media shared videos showing moments of panic and mass evacuation of settlers to shelters, while others lay on the ground seeking cover, coinciding with air raid sirens blaring in several areas of central Israel.
For his part, the US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, hinted at a military response against Yemen, stating: “Perhaps B-2 bombers should visit Yemen,” referencing their use in previous bombing operations targeting sensitive facilities.
He added that the “amazing interception system allowed Israelis the opportunity to head to shelters and wait for the danger to pass.”
The “Hetz” system is known to be part of Israel’s missile shield designed to intercept long-range ballistic missiles, especially those launched from outside Earth’s atmosphere.
According to Israeli Army Radio, the Houthi group has launched approximately 53 missiles towards Israeli territory since the resumption of the war on the Gaza Strip more than three and a half months ago.
