France Calls on Houthis to Immediately Release United Nations Staff

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

France has reiterated its firm rejection of the arbitrary detentions carried out by the Houthis against United Nations staff and humanitarian workers in Yemen, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all those detained.

Reports indicate that the Houthis have been detaining these employees for over a year, in addition to representatives of civil society and diplomatic missions—further worsening the already dire humanitarian situation in the country.

In a statement, France said that the continued detentions are obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid to areas in need, particularly in Saada Governorate, where UN operations have been suspended for the past three months.

The French statement emphasized the need to respect international humanitarian law and to ensure the protection of humanitarian workers, stressing the importance of enabling them to carry out their duties in complete safety.
