A Former Yemeni Minister Emphasizes The Importance Of Protecting Socotra And Maintaining Its World Heritage Status

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

Dr. Fahd Kafain, the former Minister of Fish Wealth and head of the Socotra Center for Humanitarian and Strategic Studies, stated that the Socotra archipelago officially joined the World Heritage List in 2008, as one of the most important unique natural sites globally.

He explained that UNESCO described Socotra at the time as an exceptional site in terms of biodiversity, with many endemic and rare species that distinguished the island.

Kafain added that the decision to join reflects the importance of protecting nature and preserving biodiversity, but he stressed that international and local support was not up to par with aspirations, and Socotra did not witness genuine investment in environmental infrastructure that aligns with its global status.

He also noted that the engagement with this classification at the national level was weak, and the level of protection and evaluation measures declined during the past years, especially with climate changes and the political turmoil the island witnessed in the last decade.

He pointed out that a joint team from UNESCO and the International Union for Conservation of Nature is currently working on assessing the state of measures related to Socotra’s environment and determining the extent of its impact by climatic and political changes, to ensure the sustainability of the island’s classification as a World Heritage site.

He affirmed that the global criteria that were adopted when Socotra was declared part of the list in 2008 still stand, and that the global value of the island still holds a prestigious position, and that it is impossible to abandon this rare gem.

In conclusion, Kafain called on the government, local authorities, and citizens to cooperate with the international team to protect Socotra and enhance conservation efforts, considering the preservation of the island a shared responsibility that requires collective and diligent work, stressing the importance of preserving this unique natural site, which is considered a priceless divine gift.

Finally, he wished the specialized team success in its mission to preserve Socotra’s natural and environmental heritage.
