Horrific fires engulf IDP camps in Abyan, causing injuries and mass displacement

Yemen Monitor/Abyan/Special:

Abyan Governorate in southern Yemen witnessed a new humanitarian disaster on Thursday after two large fires broke out in IDP camps in Khanfar district, resulting in the injury of a woman and the displacement of dozens of families, in addition to the complete destruction of their property.

The first fire broke out suddenly in three “huts” in Al-Nowba camp in Al-Koud city, and the flames quickly spread to engulf eight other huts, causing varying degrees of damage.

The destruction was not limited to homes only, but also affected food supplies, furniture, bedding, and even livestock, leaving displaced families – including children and women – in the open without shelter.

The fire resulted in the injury of a woman in addition to the heavy material losses.

A second fire complicates the tragedy further

In a simultaneous incident, another fire broke out in Arshan IDP camp, completely destroying three huts, increasing the number of displaced people who lost everything they own.

The humanitarian suffering worsened with the increasing numbers of families who suddenly found themselves without a roof over their heads or food to secure their survival.

The affected families face catastrophic humanitarian conditions after losing their homes and sources of livelihood, while the region lacks the most basic necessities for urgent relief.

Displaced people appealed to humanitarian organizations and concerned authorities to take urgent action to secure shelter, food, and medical support, especially for the injured and displaced who are already suffering from the consequences of the ongoing war in Yemen.
