After the Closure Decision… Yemeni President Emphasizes Importance of Reopening Nishtun Port

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, emphasized the importance of reopening Nishtun Port in Al-Mahrah Governorate, in the eastern part of the country, and enabling the local authority to perform its duties and enhance its role in managing local affairs.

President Al-Alimi’s affirmations came during his meeting with the Governor of Al-Mahrah, Mohammed Ali Yasser, where they discussed the general situation in the governorate, primarily service priorities, salary payments, and improving the institutional performance of the local authority.

This emphasis comes in the context of developments related to a previous decision by the Presidential Leadership Council, issued in November 2025, which mandated the closure of several newly established sea ports and outlets that were in violation of organizing laws in the governorates of Shabwa, Hadramout, Al-Mahrah, and Lahj. This was part of efforts aimed at controlling public revenues and addressing financial imbalances.

Decision No. (11) of 2025 included the closure of Qana Port in Shabwa, Al-Shihr Port in Hadramout, and Nishtun Port in Al-Mahrah, in addition to the Ras al-Ara area in Lahj, as part of a government economic reform plan targeting the improvement of public resource management efficiency.

During the meeting, President Al-Alimi stressed the importance of addressing various issues related to the service and economic situation in Al-Mahrah, most importantly the regular payment of salaries and the settlement of financial entitlements, in a way that contributes to alleviating the suffering of employees and improving basic services.

He also affirmed the Presidential Leadership Council’s keenness to empower local authorities to carry out their duties efficiently and to enhance coordination with the government to ensure the stability of conditions and meet the needs of citizens across various governorates.
