Severe Weather Hits Marib and Shabwa in Eastern Yemen, Worsening Displaced Persons’ Suffering

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The Executive Unit for IDP Camps Management in Marib Governorate (Eastern Yemen) has issued an urgent appeal to the legitimate government and humanitarian partners for immediate intervention to rescue hundreds of families affected by a violent thunderstorm that struck the Al-Irq Al-Sharqi camp and broad areas across the governorate.
The Unit reported that the storm caused a humanitarian disaster, breaking wooden electricity poles which then fell onto the tents of the displaced. This triggered widespread panic and placed the lives of civilians—particularly women and children—in direct danger.
Damage also extended to sectors seven and eight in Safer and Al-Ruwaik, as well as the Al-Sumayya camp, southern sector camps, and Jo Al-Naseem. Severe winds and heavy rains uprooted and destroyed the shelters of dozens of families, leaving them out in the open.
The Unit called upon humanitarian and governmental agencies to swiftly provide safe, weather-resistant shelter, along with food and relief supplies. They also urged support for emergency response teams to assess the damage, emphasizing the necessity of repairing the electrical grid and removing immediate hazards facing the displaced amid what they described as a highly critical humanitarian situation.
In a related context, a dense dust storm swept through several districts of Shabwa Governorate (Eastern Yemen) on Friday afternoon, arriving from the north, according to local sources.
Sources added that the dust wave caused low visibility, affecting the movement of citizens and vehicles on city streets, amid warnings of continued weather fluctuations currently being experienced across several regions of the country.
