Detention Of Fuel Tankers in Hadramout Ignites a Severe Petroleum Derivatives Crisis in Al-Mahrah

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Al-Mahrah Governorate has witnessed a sharp escalation in the fuel crisis in recent days after petroleum tankers belonging to the Oil Company’s Al-Mahrah branch were detained in Hadramout.

Authorities controlling the roads imposed hefty fees amounting to 400,000 riyals on each tanker, obstructing their passage and causing a decline in fuel supplies in Al-Mahrah.

According to informed sources at the Oil Company in Al-Mahrah, the tankers were en route from Marib to meet the local market’s needs for petroleum products. However, the new measures halted them, triggering a severe supply crisis and long lines of vehicles in front of fuel stations, amid growing fears that the situation may worsen and continue for the coming days.

Political activist Suleiman Al-Jadhahi said the crisis was not caused by the authorities in Al-Mahrah or the local Oil Company. He noted that the tankers have been detained for more than ten days in the Al-Khush‘ah area of Hadramout due to widespread tribal road blockages.

Al-Jadhahi added that these blockages are the main cause of the crisis, calling on the governors of Al-Mahrah and Hadramout to coordinate urgently and intervene immediately to release the tankers and secure their passage.

Meanwhile, activist Mohammed Awad Rayyan explained that the fuel crisis has caused continuous congestion at fueling stations in Al-Ghaydah, the capital of Al-Mahrah, with citizens repeatedly questioning the availability of petroleum products.

He confirmed that the detention of the tankers in Al-Khush‘ah due to the road blockages has led to major delays in fuel distribution. He also stressed that the authorities in Hadramout are urged to intervene quickly to reopen the roads and ensure the safe delivery of the tankers to Al-Mahrah.
